Saunders
Scores Again in Horsham
Veteran Runner Gary Saunders
once again showed his preference for flatter courses,
when he took out the Tylers Hardware 8km Handicap,
held in Horsham last Saturday.

Saunders was a clear
winner, repeating his win earlier this year in the
Andrew Darnell Memorial race, also held along the
banks of the Wimmera River in Horsham.
Running off
4mins 45 seconds, Saunders soon reeled in front marker
Carolyn Lehmann, then went on to open up a good lead
with 3km to go
Not far back, mid field runners
Susie Ellis and Steve Baird, both running off the
same mark, had made their way to the head of
the rest of the field, and were closing in on Saunders.
However, over
the closing stages of the race, Saunders held on
to win by over half a minute from Baird, who had
got the better of Ellis. Ellis came in in third place.
The days fastest time was
set by Adrian Tyler, with 30 minutes and 56 seconds.
Susie Ellis was the fastest female in a time of 34
minutes 31 seconds.
As is traditional in the Tylers
Hardware Handicap, each runner nominates a time they
think they will run, then remove their watches for
the race. The runner who runs the time closest to
their estimate wins a prize.
This year, Gary Howden
ran just 7 seconds faster than his estimate, and
was the runner closest to their estimate, just one
second closer than Carolyn Lehmann, who was just
8 seconds faster than her estimate. Must have been
a slight tail wind there somewhere that they forgot
to allow for!!!
